I have cheap-ass Amazon bluetooth headphones that I use at the gym. They’re uncomfortable, don’t sound very good, and occasionally my ear sweat shorts them out and one side stops playing music. Because electrocution by ear sweat seems like a bad way to die, I’m once again shopping for bluetooth headphones.
The reason I only invested $12.69 in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is because I got them before I turned into a full-time gym rat.
But now I am a full-time gym rat, and my SoundBOTs just ain’t cutting it. I still don’t want to spend a big pile of money on headphones that will get all sweaty while I work out, but I want something a bit nicer.
Turns out, bluetooth headphones, like hoverboards self-balancing scooters, are a product made by a million nameless Chinese OEM companies and sold with different logos and different price points by random Amazon sellers.
Your typical Amazon bluetooth headphone listing tries to cram as many details about the headphones into the title, so you see the feature buzzwords in the search results. Each page has several product shots, often CGI renderings rather than real-life photos. Most of them have a picture that shows all the different sized rubber ear bud covers and charging cables and other assorted doodads that come with the headphones, which you will of course lose.
Then, there’s the Person Doing Sporty Things With These Headphones shot. Without fail, these are a stock photo of people exercising, with the headphones badly photoshopped on to the stock photo model. For example, the stock photo at the top of this post came from the listing for

My favorites are the SoundPEATS Q9A because nobody actually dresses like that girl when they go to the gym (but at least she’s got weight lifting gloves on if she decides to do some bench presses in her underwear!), and MPow Cheetah because that’s a great name and they have their MPOW brand headphones photoshopped onto a stock photo of some dude practicing boxing. He could be saying MPOW! every time he air-punches his imaginary opponent.
Also, this dude keeps showing up! He’s like the Fabio of Amazon bluetooth headphone Person Doing Sporty Things With These Headphones pictures!

Are bluetooth earphones actually viable for the gym? I generally want mine as light as possible (particularly when running) and wireless headphones means there’s a battery pack somewhere.

The ones I have last for maybe 6 hours on a charge, give or take. They hardly weigh anything. Usually I plug them in to charge when I come home from the gym but I don’t always remember to. It’s pretty rare that I manage to run out of battery in the middle of a workout.
Where have all the lightweights gone?

Go with something from Jaybird. They are probably a little more than what you’re looking in the searches (I really didn’t click on the links), but they’re extremely comfortable, don’t move, and have excellent sound quality. http://www.jaybirdsport.com/

$140 (on Amazon) for headphones that I’m going to sweat all over is too steep.
That’s probably why they can afford all those pictures on their website of people doing sporty things while actually wearing their headphones, instead of photoshopping the headphones onto stock photos.

I’m a gym rat (3-5 times a week) and a general fitness freak (cycle or run daily, hike, ski, snow shoe, rock climb and well basically any other individual sport). I use Jaybird X2’s for everything. I get about 6-8 hours and they’re light and stay in place. The batteries are in the tips but the tips are barely larger than many other IEMs I’ve used. I’d recommend them, it’s only been a month or two with them for me but so much better than getting the cable caught or fumbling with the cable.

A sweat warranty is a good policy. It looks like the cheapest of the cheap-ass Amazon ones don’t have such a warranty, but the Phaiser and iPhax ones in the $40-60 range do have a sweat warranty.
The Phaiser ones with little magnets to stick the earbuds to each other are 50 bucks and they have Amazon Bluetooth Headphone Stock Photo Fabio in their product page so those might be my move!

Get the jaybirds, they are hands down the best bluetooth option out there. The fit is hit-n-miss for some people though, see if you can try a pair.
I have tried the cheap crap, powerbeats, etc. Don’t skimp on something you use 5 days a week, $/use
